In this video, we discuss the top mistakes hopeful adoptive parents make – and how to avoid them.

The Three Mistakes Hopeful Adoptive Parents Make

1. The “What Worked For Them Will Work For Me” Mistake

We know it’s easy to want to simply follow a friend or family member’s adoption journey, step by step, if you witnessed it go well. “If it worked for them, it will work for me!” This is not always the case. State laws create HUGE differences in terms of what type of adoption is right for you. (A little more info on State differences here.) And even if you live in the same state, just remember, this process is different for everyone! Find the right way for YOU.

2. The “Information Overload” Mistake

It’s extremely common to call every single adoption agency in the phonebook to try to get the most information you can when you begin this process. But that can get…chaotic. Not all agencies are created equal. Private agencies, due to being privately owned, can have vastly different policies and guidelines. This is an easy trap to fall into, and it can leave you feeling confused & stressed, due to all the differing information. So, try to be strategic and measured when reaching out to agencies and experts at the beginning of this journey.

3. The “Quick Commitment” Mistake

It can be hard not to select the first agency you find, just to feel like you’re moving along in this process. We’ve all been there in life. “I found an agency, I liked the woman I spoke to, let’s just work with them!” If you don’t know the specifics of the type of adoption you’re pursuing, this can be a big mistake. Make sure you’ve fully decided the age you’re hoping to adopt – it’s time to get specific. Then, decide what type of adoption you want – international, foster care, newborn, etc. NOW it’s time to select the agency that is right for you.

Fast Fact

Private agencies mostly help with newborn adoptions. Some will also work with your State for foster care adoptions. It’s extremely important to find out what each agency can provide before selecting one for a home study.

Pieces of Wisdom

Getting your home study done first is the worst thing you can do. That is not the first thing that you need to do when you’re starting your adoption journey. The first thing you need to do is be clear on the type of adoption that you’re looking for. Because that decision will effect every other decision you make in the adoption process.”

– Lucrece Bundy

On deciding what type of adoption is right for you: “You need to think of it through the lens of, “What can I handle in this season of my life?” Stick with it, and then find the professionals that are going to be on your team and help you achieve that goal.”
