Community theater gives me a chance to play! Here I am as the White Knight in Alice in Wonderland.

Dogs or cats?

I am a lover of nature in general, animals of all types specifically, dogs are my friends, but cats are my companions, and Roxy, in all her diva glory, is my current housemate.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you look at the night sky?

I think about the big bang, that over 13 billion years ago, everything that exists in the universe could fit inside a teaspoon. We are all made of stardust and are more connected than we know.

My favorite place in the World is...

the island of Zanzibar in Tanzania, East Africa. It has everything! White sandy beaches, the smell of jasmine, an old Arab city where you can get lost in its beauty. The American Southwest is a close second!

My philosophy on parenting is...

to meet the child where they're at and help them contribute based on their enthusiasm and capability. I've been inspired by mothers all over the world who understand that capacity changes with age and that responsibility and joy enhance each other. I see myself as a guide to becoming their true selves so that they can contribute to this world and society as only they can.

Exploring caves in South Africa. Especially fun since I had to wash my jeans by hand!

You can see the nearest playground from my back porch! Such a family friendly community.

If you had to live on an RV or sailboat for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Ooo! I have a fantasy of traveling around in a solar-powered RV with my child, visiting all the national parks, then driving down to South America. Traveling and living abroad has opened my perspectives so much and I hope to pass that down through the generations.

Three years from now, I hope our child’s birth mom is…

continuing to grow, feeling proud of her choices, and at peace. I hope that she knows how grateful I am and how much more love there is in the world because of this tremendous gift that she gave.

If I could change one thing about the World, it would be...

that people could see the potential of everyone around them and the interconnectedness with every other being. We exist because of and through each other.

We are the best choice because…

I am dedicated to providing a home where the child is free to become their truest self, is healthy (physically, mentally, and spiritually), and knows they are loved and cared for. I have created a life where I can be both a working mom and a stay-at-home mom (with no chance of divorce!), exploring induced lactation (yes, adoptive moms can breast-feed!), and living in one of the most child-friendly neighborhood near our nation's capitol.

My best friend would describe me as...

intensely curious, tenacious, independent, loving, funny and fearless. I disagree about the fearless part; I just find my way through the fear to accomplish what's most important to me.

My neighborhood is a good place to raise a family because…

there is a playground in every block, some of the best schools in the state of Maryland, a tight-knit parenting culture, aftful afternoons, summer circus camps (if you're into that sort of thing) and a community center with so many classes for kids. I chose to live here because it's so safe, diverse, family-friendly, highly walkable, and right next to a forest preserve.

In my 30s, I went to South Africa for 2 years in the Peace Corps. I wrote grants for multiple projects like raising chickens to support community organizations.

Like all cats, Roxy loves to "help" me when I'm reading (or working on the computer)

My favorite parts of getting togther with friends is playing with their children! Jean, my godchild, builds a house while Nathan plays with a puzzle.

Favorite season and why?

I love spring in Maryland when the flowers are blooming (but before it's too buggy), summer in Seattle and swimming in Lake Union with Mt. Rainer looming in the distance, fall in Vermont (where I went to school), and winter in California (where you can get to the snow but it's not forced upon you).
