Hello!

Who are we beyond the smiling faces on this profile? We are two fellow human beings who cannot wait to welcome a third into our family. We began our journey toward parenthood three years ago, after celebrating our first wedding anniversary. We gave ourselves time to settle into marriage together. We did not want to rush into parenthood, but wanted a strong relationship as a foundation for building our family. We were beyond excited to begin trying to have a child, but after losing two early pregnancies and multiple trips to doctors, we determined this was not our path to parenthood. We began asking trusted friends and family members about their adoption journeys. We both grew up with cousins who had been adopted. The love in their parents' eyes clearly communicates the joy in parenting these lives entrusted to them. We feel the intense excitement of anticipated parenthood. But we also feel the immense responsibility. We respect this journey, and you. We can’t imagine the difficult choices you’ve faced. We hope you find the choice that brings you the greatest peace as you plan a future for your little one. This past summer I (Monique) started sewing a baby blanket. We are confident in our faith that a new life is out there waiting to join us. This blanket is a symbol of the courage it has taken to piece each square together in this faith. This blanket is a symbol of our hope and eagerness to wrap it around our own little one. Thank you, from the depths of our hearts, for taking the time to get to know us and considering us to be part of your journey.

I'm super competitive when it comes to...

bike training. When riding outside on the road, I am happy to go at a leisurely pace. However, on my indoor bike trainer, even when I tell myself "this will just be a recovery ride," I go far too hard and am always racing for faster speeds.

My philosophy on parenting is...

Children should be explorers, inquisitive and experiencing things unknown to them. Parents should be the guides, familiar with what the explorers are seeing, knowing where danger lurks and where the explorers are safe to discover what interests them.

Favorite season and why?

Although I like winter and spring, I prefer autumn even more. Apple cider and apple butter conjure up fond memories from childhood. The morning frosts promise winter and the potential for skiing. The shortening days mean I can stop worrying about outdoor projects and retreat inside. Of course, the changing leaves provide more variety of color than at any other point in the year.

Favorite season and why?

I love spring. There's the mystery and suspense of wondering which flowers and bushes I've planted in previous years will return for another go around the sun. Then there's the joy of watching them burst into bloom at different times and in different colors, filling our yard with cheerful pinks, purples, and yellow, and wonderful scents. There's the hope and ancitipation involved in watching blossoms transform into the beginnings of peaches I can't wait to enjoy in late summer.

What scares you?

Even more than my distaste for snakes, I am afraid of doing too little to improve my community. Many organizations like Boy Scouts stress that you should leave a campsite better than you found it. I would be horrified if I did not give my community the same respect.

If you had to live on an RV or sailboat for the rest of your life, which would it be?

I would choose to live on a sailboat. First of all, since the Earth's surface is covered significantly more by water than by land, there are more places to go. Even parts of the land are accessible by ports and rivers.

If you had to live on an RV or sailboat for the rest of your life, which would it be?

A sailboat! One of my favorite books is by a young man who sailed around the world in a small boat, taking time to visit people and places all along the shores of our immense world. He started this journey out alone, but by the end he had found his soulmate and many new friends. I'd want to be able to connect to people around the world.

My favorite place in the World is...

home. I've traveled a lot around the world but my favorite thing is to come back home at the end of each trip and enjoy reconnecting with the people and places who help make me who I am at heart. My family is there excited to hear about my adventures but then even more delighted to share a meal and enjoy the beauty of the valley where we live.

The most special thing I own is...

a very specific tea mug. Most of my possessions have little sentimental value, including other mugs. However, a close friend gave this mug to me, and the text on it makes me smile. Later, another friend modified the text on it to make it even funnier. I no longer use it because of the delicacy of the modifications, but I frequently see it in the cupboard. It always reminds me of happy memories.

-Alex

Dogs or cats?

As an adult, I have lived with both dogs and cats and have loved each animal. The curiosity and energy of dogs reminds me of a small child with all their questions. Meanwhile, cats remind me of teenagers: more emotionally separate, giving a vibe of indifference to their parents, but still worth loving.

Complete the sentence, “I can’t live without……”

burritos. I lived in Europe for a couple of years and the thing I missed most was a tortilla filled with beans. So I learned to make my own! And I'm still making those burritos on a regular basis, swapping out new ingredients I want to try to incorporate the flavors of different cuisines that inspire me. I love to cook and try new types of foods, but I will always come back to my favorite, the burrito.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you look at the night sky?

I remember that we are not seeing the stars as they are right now, we see them as they were when they emitted the light. Outer space is so vast, yet our tiny planet holds almost all of human history as we know it. But when light from stars that started traveling years ago reaches us, we get to see stars as they were in the past.
