The adoption process can sometimes feel all-consuming. Here, we offer a few self-care tips for hopeful adoptive parents as you maneuver this journey.
Allow yourself to step away sometimes.
We know how hard this can be when you’re in the midst of the adoption process. You always want to make sure you’re plugged in, and doing all you can. Remember to allow yourself some breaks. Close the computer, get outside, spend some time doing what you love. We promise, it’ll all be here when you get back!
Turn up the tunes.
Play that song that always makes you smile. Turn up that album that gets you dancing. Or, head to our very own PairTree Spotify Playlist! We collected songs that our Hopeful Adoptive Parents said keep them smiling. Remember – music really can put a smile on your face!
Journal it out.
The impact of journaling on mental health is immense. Whether in your favorite notebook, or in the PairTree Diary, taking some time to write it out can have wonderful benefits. Don’t know where to start? Try writing a gratitude list, jotting down some things that are worrying you, or making a note of your feelings day to day.
Carve out some time to do what you love.
Haven’t picked up a book in a while? Missing your favorite park? Been too long since you’ve had an evening with friends? Try your best to incorporate the things that make you happiest into your schedule. We know it’s not easy. Days can get hectic! But try your best to find some time to celebrate the things that bring you joy.
Ask for help when you need it.
It can feel vulnerable to ask for help. Just remember, it’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help when you need it – it’s a sign of strength. In fact, delegating can be a life-changer. Just like you help those you love, they would probably be more than happy to help you in return.
Connect with those who understand.
Chatting with people who understand can be a huge comfort. You can talk to friends or family who’ve adopted, find a Facebook group that makes you feel heard, or connect with other Hopeful Adoptive Parents at our Community Forum. Reach out to those who get it.
Be kind to yourself.
The most important thing is to be kind and gentle to yourself. If you notice any negative self-talk (I’m not doing enough, I’m failing, I can’t do this), meet it with self-love (I’m strong, I’m worthy, I’m doing my best). The first step to self-care is as simple as that – love yourself as best you can.
Final Thoughts
In a process that can drain you, tending to your mental health is important. Whether it’s through journaling, listening to some music, or connecting with those who get it – even tiny changes can have a huge impact. Caring for yourself may seem scary, especially if you haven’t done it in a long time, but YOU ARE WORTH IT.
