Hello!

Dear Birthmother, Eastin, Lilah, and I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time to read this letter. We know that you are facing the most difficult decision, and we want you to know that we are thinking of you during this time. You are incredibly brave, selfless, and filled with so much love. We honor you and your choices, and we respect you with our whole hearts. I’m Kim. I’ve been an elementary school teacher for eleven years. I’ve been active in our youth community for most of my adult life. I’m a very positive person who tries to keep an optimistic outlook on life. I love being creative and finding beauty in the world around us. I married the love of my life, Eastin, ten years ago. We were so eager and excited to start our family, but we were met with four miscarriages and learned that our path would look different. This will be our second adoption. After having those miscarriages, we learned as much as we could about this path, and we adopted our 5-year-old daughter when she was born. She is the light of our lives, and we are filled with endless gratitude for her birth mother—and we are still in contact with her. Eastin is an incredible creator. He is a writer, an amazing illustrator, and just the most wonderful father. His bond with our daughter is so strong and so inspiring. He is patient, kind, and loving. He’s everything I knew he would be as a father, and we are just so grateful that adoption led us to our daughter and helped us create our dream family. We love nature, gardening, hiking, and creating beautiful experiences for our daughter to learn, play, and grow in. We believe in building strong, healthy, and positive relationships and feel strongly about raising our children to believe in themselves and know that they are so worthy, so loved, and so treasured for who they are, as they are. Our family is extremely supported. My parents live with us, and they are the most caring, compassionate, and thoughtful individuals who love our daughter with every ounce of their being. They support us every step of the way and are so excited for their next grandchild to join our family. The rest of our family lives close by, and all of the cousins get to play and grow up together in such a beautiful way. We know in our hearts that we are meant to have one more child come into our family, and our daughter is beyond excited to have a sibling. We are thankful to have the opportunity to adopt again and complete our family. We cannot begin to imagine what you are experiencing, but we want you to know that we are a loving family, filled with so much joy, peace, and happiness. We’ve experienced hardship and know how to work through it together as a unit. We are filled with so much gratitude for you and for your consideration in this very difficult decision. We will love your child, take care of them in the best way possible, and create a life filled with love, consistency, peace, joy, and beautiful experiences. With love, Kim and Eastin

I hope our child’s birth mother is…

kind to herself. I hope that she knows how strong and brave she is and that she is making a choice that will provide her child with a beautiful, safe, experience rich life that will be filled with so much love. I hope she finds happiness, safety and peace.

Dogs or cats?

Why not both? We currently don’t have any pets, but I grew up with dogs and cats and rabbits and birds . . . I just love animals in general.

Exploring adventures!

We are the best choice because…

we are a family that believes in kindness over everything. We are extremely passionate about raising our children to be the best versions of themselves, whoever that might be. We will always embrace their interests, their joys and their hopes and work as hard as we can to help them achieve their goals. We believe in teaching our children the importance of emotional regulation and that it's okay to experience and understand their emotions. Our goal is to raise loved, happy, well-rounded children who know the beauty of their story, and provide them with as many beautiful life experiences as we can. As educators, we have a strong background in understanding children's development and how to support their growth, emotionally, physically, socially and academically in a safe, encouraging and engaging way. We have a very supportive family that loves our adopted daughter to the moon.

My best friend would describe me as...

A bright light. I have a very positive outlook on life and truly enjoy sharing this with my family, friends and community. We've experienced hardship and had difficult trials, but I've learned to see the beauty from ashes and find the light.

My favorite place in the World is...

I have a few and it depends. First, I’m fortunate to say that my home with my family is my favorite place. I love being outside and in the garden, in particular with the plants and the birds, teaching the kiddo how to dig or sow seeds, or figuring out what to plant and where with my wife. Second, I think it would be the Aran Islands in Ireland, off the Galway Bay. It’s a beautiful place. Quiet, peaceful, no cars. Ancient sites—ruins of churches and forts—and when you stand at the edge of the cliff looking out over the Atlantic, it feels like you’re at the end of the world.

If I could choose one type of food to eat for the rest of my life, it would be:

Salad, fresh from the garden.

My philosophy on parenting is...

We love our child unconditionally, in the true sense of the word, while teaching them and preparing them to thrive in this world. We nurture their interests and passions. We let them explore and use play-based learning to educate them and help them develop their skills. We let them experience their emotions while keeping them safe. We help them learn about their behavior and mistakes through reflection and examination.

-Eastin

We are the best choice because…

Of course, we will love our child unconditionally—holding their hand when they need it, teaching them to stand on their own, and letting go when it’s time. We will support them in every way we can, teaching and educating them about themselves, their emotions, cultivating their interests and passions. We will teach them love and respect for others and nature—helping them see that we’re just a small part of one giant community of people, plants, and animals all together among the stars—to make the best choices they can, to do the right thing, and help those who need it. And through all of that, we will do everything we can to give them a joyful childhood filled with play and wonder at books and art, music, new and good food, all while preparing them to go out there and leave their mark on the world when they’ve grown and are ready.

My favorite place in the World is...

Our home. We've dreamed big and worked really hard to create a space that is extremely welcoming and inviting to our family and friends. Watching my daughter learn and play with her cousins and friends in their learning space and playrooms is one of the greatest gifts. We often gather at our home, and get to truly celebrate all of life's moments- big and small in such a cozy and warm way. The kids love to swim in the pool, play on the playground, ride bikes and scooters on the long driveway, look for tadpoles and little fish in the creek and watch fireflies on the lawn in the evening. There is just something so special about our home.

Favorite season and why?

This is a tough one. I think what I like most of all about the seasons is that they are different, and even more than that would be the transition periods—winter to spring, when the buds begin to form on the trees and the seedlings pop up in the gardens, or summer to fall, when a hot day finds a hint of a cool breeze or there’s a single yellowing leaf in a tree of green, just teasing at what’s to come.

Do you consider yourself religious or spiritual?

I would consider myself a religious person. I was raised Christian, and believe in treating people with love, kindness, respect and compassion.

If I could have dinner with anyone—dead or alive—I would pick...

Since I’m lucky enough to have dinner with my family every day, I’ll choose Stephen Crane. He’s one of my favorite writers who died in 1900 at the young age of 28, and I imagine a conversation about life, the universe, and everything with him would be fascinating—but who knows?

If you had to pick a famous person to play you in a movie, who would it be?

Joshua Jackson. I guess only because people have told me we look alike.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you look at the night sky?

We’re fortunate, where we are, to have a good view of the stars at night. And especially so if all the lights are turned off. And it's easy and natural for the imagination to wander looking at the sky, and the first thing that might come to mind is something along the lines of, “My goodness. How small we are and how big the rest of the world and the galaxy and the universe are.” We’re fortunate, where we are, to have a good view of the stars at night. And it's easy and natural for the imagination to wander looking at the sky, and the first thing that might come to mind is something along the lines of, “My goodness. How small we are and how big the rest of the world and the galaxy and the universe are.” But, after a moment of awe and wonder at that, comes a feeling of gratitude for just being alive to stand there and look at the sky and have those thoughts.

-Eastin

What scares you?

Losing my family. I can weather most any other storm.

-Eastin

I hope our child’s birth mother is…

I hope you are aware of how strong you are in making the decision to create an adoption plan. Life is anything but certain, but your showing strength and resilience and compassion in your decision is a beautiful and wonderful thing. And I hope you know that we will always love you and be grateful for you and will give our lives over to raising and loving your child.

If you had to live on an RV or sailboat for the rest of your life, which would it be?

Sailboat. I grew up on Long Island, in a small town near the water, and spent much of my childhood out on a boat or near the bay or the ocean. I like the freedom of the ocean and the waves, and also the mystery of the sea. And lighthouses. I love lighthouses. I don’t know how to sail, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to learn.

-Eastin

What is the best word to describe our family?

loving. We've been told many times that you can feel our love and support when you meet us.

Favorite season and why?

My favorite season is autumn. Our family comes to life this time of year in the most amazing way. From the moment the temperature starts to drop and the mornings become cooler, there is a magic in the air that brings so much peace, and beauty to this special time of year. We love spending time hiking and appreciating the magnificent changes happening in nature and sharing this with our daughter. Seeing her get to experience these whimsical moments is just the greatest gift. We love apple picking and pumpkin picking, along with the chance to teach our children about the incredible lessons you can learn throughout this season. And of course, getting ready for the upcoming holiday season.

love first. We always want our children to know that they are so loved. We want them to know that we will always support them, teach them, guide them and help them. We believe in modeling and teaching as many strategies and expectations through play, storytelling and safe conversations. We want our children to know that it's safe to experience emotions and provide them with healthy and safe ways to manage these emotions.
